Leading edge technology for innovative textile design

Digital textile printing offers immediate results – an
advantage which can be crucial in today’s fashion market,
and which can not be achieved with silkscreen or rotary screen
printing. London College of Fashion’s investment in large
format printers aims to be a valuable resource for artist and fashion
or textile designers.
Digital textile print can make possible the accurate reproduction
of a wider range of imagery without the need of colour separation,
from photographic effects to the exact rendition of historical
reproductions. It enables design and colour changes to be made
spontaneously, and much more subtle and complex details to be printed
with greater ease than conventional printing.
Digital Fashion: Print at London College of Fashion
is a bureau service that makes state of the art equipment available
to all designers, including those that work with textiles, fashion,
theatre and costume, interiors, and home furnishings.
Using Mimake
Tx2 large format printers we can print on to any natural woven fabric,
i.e. cotton, silk, linen, wool and viscose. All fabrics go through
a pre-treatment process for inkjet, then are steamed and washed to
fix the dyes, making the resulting fabric as permanent as any store
bought garment. Artwork can be provided on CD, memory stick, or emailed.
We accept PC and Mac formats.
Expert technicians
are on hand to oversee the print process and to provide expert
advice. We are also able to offer a total design solution through
a consultancy and design service.
The bureau can also provide training facilities.

Match perfect colour calibration

Inaccuracy in reproducing colour can now be a thing of the past
with London College of Fashion’s colour management system.
Using AVA software and GretagMacbeth hardware, you can ensure that
colour calibration is match perfect from the screen throughout the
design process.
At Digital Fashion, we can calibrate monitors and printers for different
ink sets and substrates to ensure highly accurate colour management,
produce colourways from pre-separated files and simply drag and drop
new designs into existing colourways, and recolour using a variety
of simple and speedy methods. AVA Colour provides the highest quality
of tonal overprinting and fall-on simulation.
The GretagMacbeth Spectrolino, in conjunction with the SpectroScan,
can be used to input colour from chips or swatches for accurate LAB
colour data, using an annular lens optical system to ensure consistent
results from screen to inkjet print.
Digital Fashion: Colour is available to all designers, including
those that work with textiles, fashion, theatre and costume, interiors,
product design, and furniture.

Translating 2D into 3D for Rapid Prototyping

Rapid prototyping has emerged as one of the most exciting and fast
moving technologies of the last 10 years. The ability to create 3D
objects direct from CAD, without tooling and the associated set-up
costs has dramatically reduced cost and time to market for products
in many areas, including:
- Footwear
- Jewellery
- Accessories
- Special effects
- Models/Toys
- Medical
- Product
- Architecture
Digital Fashion: Make at LCF is a bureau service
available to all designers requiring 3D colour concept models from
CAD files. Using a Z Corp Spectrum 510 printer which is up to 10
times faster than other rapid prototyping processes, the bureau is
able to translate an .stl file into a 3d physical model.
A 3D CAD,
visualisation and realisation service for making .stl files is also
available.

3D Body scanning

London College of Fashion can offer a distinct advantage in leading
fashion design technology with Digital Fashion’s bodyscanning
facilities.
The 3D body measurement system developed by [TC]² uses safe white-light
technology and non-moving scan heads to capture 3D data points of
an individual’s image, automatically extracting hundreds of
extremely accurate measurements. This can be used in conjunction
with 3D design to produce spot on readings of the body.
The uses of the 3D body model can be unlimited, including:
- Custom fitting apparel
- Sizing surveys
- Apparel sizing standards development
- 3D product development
- Body shape analysis
- Animation and graphics
- Health & fitness management
- Medical applications
- Computer gaming immersion
Digital Fashion: Body is available to all designers, including those
that work with textiles, fashion, theatre and costume, interiors,
product design, and furniture.
